The Chemin des Douaniers or Customs Officers Path connects the port of Macinaggio with that of Centuri, at the top of the Cap Corse. This is a wild coastline, a unique and exceptional natural environment, now part of the largest coastal reserve in France. The are is also rich in history with watchtowers and chapels.  You will discover the extreme northern point of Corsica, the tiny hamlet of Barcaggio, where you will spend the night. This path is a real gem and ideal for a short walking break, another Corsican trail that should be discovered without moderation.

Day 1 - Bastia

Your stay begins in Bastia, a town focussed around the port. Bastia has a vibrant old town, its closeness to Italy highlights its distinct Genoese feel and you will discover a rich Baroque heritage. On its heights, the village of Cardo, invites you for a short hike on arrival. Overnight in Bastia in a central hotel, on a B&B basis.

6km, 4h, +650m, -650m.

Day 2 - Bastia to Barcaggio

Transfer to the village of Macinaggio, starting point of your coastal hike on the customs officers' path. This trail will allow you to admire the reserve of the Finocchiarola Islands, the shattered Genoese tower of Santa Maria as well as many beaches, inhabitted by the odd roaming cow. The beaches are wild, enticing you for a swim, before reaching the northernmost village of Corsica, Barcaggio. Overnight in Barcaggio in a small hotel, on B&B basis.

15km, 5h30, +450m, -450m.

Day 3 - Barcaggio to Centuri

Departing from Barcaggio, the trail runs alongside the cliffs that overhang the coastline, before heading off through the maquis. It is a wild and authentic landscape now protected by the Marine National Park and is the largest in France. Take a stop at the Tollare Tower and the Semaphore of Monte Grossu before reaching the sleepy harbour of Centuri. This fishing village, nestled in the heart of a small creek, offers a unique resting place. Overnight in Centuri in a 3* hotel on a B&B basis.

10km, 5h30, 600m, -600m.

Day 4 - Centuri to Bastia

In the morning transfer to Bastia. End of our services after your arrival in Bastia. Extra nights available, please ask for details.

Access

Bastia Airport or Port. If you arrive into Calvi, please ask for details of transport connections.

Number of participants

Reservations for minimum of 2 participants. NB. For safety reasons we do not accept solo hiker reservations on Self-Guided treks.

Level

Moderate. Involves longer walks, generally from 4-6 hours a day. The nature of the terrain presents little technical difficulty but some previous hill walking experience is useful. The ascents will vary from 400m to 800m altitude gain per day. See our level ratings.

Guiding

Self-Guided Walking. We provide you with a Travel Dossier complete with A4 copies of the IGN maps and a walking guide created by our team. During your hike our 24-hour assistance service will also be able to answer all your questions and, if necessary, assist you with the smooth running of your stay.

Luggage transfers

During this walk you will carry only a small day sack with a water bottle, camera, picnic, trailfood, sun and wet weather gear. Luggage is transported by vehicle, point to point.
