New for 2023 - The GR20 South is a great introduction to the GR20. For this version of our trek, we reserve your accommodationin nearby hotels and provide transport to the trailhead when necessary. You have your main luggage throughout and it is a real pleasure to stay in local, village hotels and will certainly add to the enjoyment of the hike for those used to their creature comforts.

Day 1 - Ajaccio to Bavella

We meet at 2 pm at the Ajaccio ferry terminal. The journey to Bavella is by bus to the village of Zonza at the foot of the Aiguilles de Bavella. Perched at 750m, Zonza offers a panoramic view the surrounding mountainscape including Bavella and Alcudine. Zonza is a huddle of old granite houses, built on rocky blocks which dominate the Asinao valley in the middle of chestnut trees, pines and holm oaks. Settle into your hotel for the next 3 nights.

Day 2 - Bavella to Paliri

After a short transfer you arrive at the Col de Bavella, considered the most beautiful in Corsica by the extent and richness of its panorama. The Aiguilles de Bavella form an impressive massif of pinnacles carved in red granite. Your first steps on the GR20 take you through the beautiful forest of Bavella to the Paliri refuge. On the way back, you will be able to discover the Tafunatu, a famous mountain whose particularity is to have a perforated summit. Transfer back to Zonza. Night at the hotel.

10km, 5h00, +560m, -560m.

Day 3 - Aiguilles de Bavella

Transfer again to the Bavella pass. You take the alpine variant of the GR20 which winds under the towers of the Aiguilles de Bavella then find the classic GR20 which brings you back to the Col de Bavella. Transfer to Zonza for your last night at the hotel.

11km, 7h00, +710m, -710m.

Day 4 - Coscione plateau to Cozzano

Transfer to the Bucchinera sheepfolds at the entrance to the magnificent Cuscionu plateau. Located at an altitude of 1500m, this high place of mountain pastures will make you discover another facet of the variety and the richness of the Corsican landscapes. On this plateau, between wetlands, hills and vast flat expanses, you can observe wild pigs, cows and horses in complete freedom. You leave the GR20 to descend into the valley and reach the sunny village of Cozzano.

19km, 7h00, +370m, -1180m.

Day 5 -  Les Cretes

Transfer to Col de Verde, nestled in the heart of a century-old forest of laricio pines, firs and beeches. You take the GR20 to reach the famous refuge of Prati, from where you can see the sea if the weather is clear enough. You follow the GR20 to reach the Punta della Cappella (2041m). Return to Col de Verde by the same path. Transfer to Cozzano. Night at the hotel.

13km, 6h30, +820m, -820m.

Day 6 -Capanelle to Vizzavona

Transfer to the ski resort of Capanelle which dominates the upper valley of the Fiumorbo river. The last stage of the GR20 Sud awaits you. It will take you to the Vizzavona pass, the end of your hike, located between the two main peaks of the island. End of the stay at Vizzavona station around 4 p.m. Possibility to take a connecting train to Ajaccio, Corte, Bastia or Calvi (payable locally).

This itinerary is an example of the itinerary we aim to adhere to, correct at time of publication. Should situations arise that are beyond our control, such as severe weather conditions, or other factors that could put your safety at risk, it may be possible for the itinerary to be modified.

Departure every Sunday from May to mid September. 2 persons minimum.

Price includes

Accommodation on full board (nights 1 to 5), picnic day 6, travel dossier with A4 copies of IGN maps and walking notes and GR20 pocket map. PLEASE NOTE some of these documents cannot be sent by file transfer.

Reservation fee of €5pp, travel insurance, drinks, picnic day 1, transfers to Vizzavona, travel to Corsica.

Starts

Ajaccio port & bus station opposite the CCI building at 14h.

Ends

Friday at Vizzavona station after your last hike, around 15h.

Access

Ajaccio, Airport or Port. If you arrive into Figari please ask for details of transport connections.

Should you have any food allergies, special requests or dietary requirements, please advise at time of booking. Food is limited for vegetarians, and special diets cannot be accommodated due to the remoteness of the trek.

Number of participants

Reservations for minimum of 2 participants. NB. For safety reasons we do not accept solo hiker reservations on Self-Guided treks.

Level

Tough The walks are long between 6-9 hours a day, maybe more. You can expect steep uphill and downhill sections with maybe up to 1000m altitude gain some days. The temperatures will range and weather conditions can be severe. You are fit and have good trekking experience. See our level ratings.

PLEASE NOTE THIS WALK IS VERY TESTING, YOU NEED TO BE SURE FOOTED AND HAVE APPROPRIATE SCRAMBLING EXPERIENCE. YOU NEED TO KNOW HOW TO PLACE YOUR FEET ON ROCKY GROUND.

Guiding

Self-Guided Walking. We provide you with a Travel Dossier complete with IGN map and Topoguide created by our team. During your hike our 24-hour assistance service will also be able to answer all your questions and, if necessary, bring you useful tips for the smooth running of your stay.

Luggage transfers

During this walk you will carry only a smaller GR20 day sack with a water bottle, camera, picnic, trailfood, sun and wet weather gear. Luggage is transported by vehicle, point to point.
