Corsica is a wild unspoilt island. It is a wonderful mix of contrasting scenery, with deep gorges, sun baked rock pools and high airy granite summits. It's a real paradise for nature lovers and this itinerary takes in a superb palette of landscapes. From the busy Mediterranean port of Ajaccio, you head inland to the island's historical capital, Corte. The town was once the host for the Corsican government during the independant years. There is a choice of mountain hikes including the Tavignano Gorge, or the nearby glacier lakes. Travelling on through the remote Niolu valley, you arrive in Evisa. Locally, the village is known as 'The pearl of the mountains' because of it's natural beauty, it is surrounded by chestnut trees and a lush pine forest. The village is situated at a high altitude of 800m and it's close proximity to the sea gives it a dry, crisp temperate climate. A deep gorge leads from Evisa out towards the west coast where you will discover a windy coastal road and dramatic pink sea cliffs. This area is truly stunning and classed by UNESCO as a place of world beauty.
Day 1 Arrive in Ajaccio and check into your hotel. Time to explore the town, the ambience is Mediterranean and vibrant. If you feel like it, there is a cliff walk that leads up behind the town and offers wonderful views of the coastline and the gulf. from 6km to 11km, from 2h00 to 4h00 , +140m to +340m, -140m to -340m.
Day 2 Nice drive to Corte, the island's historical capital situated in the heart of the mountains.1h30. A walk in the Tavignano gorge amidst Mediterranean vegetation of blue and black island lavender, curry plant and juniper. A great swimming and picnic spot, smooth sun baked rocks, inviting clear rock pools - a haven of wild beauty. 12km, 6h00, + 480m, - 480m.
Day 3 45 min. Follow the GR20 path towards the dazzling Cascade des Anglais where you will discover the crystal clear, bubbly river Agnone, with its alluring rock pools and dramatic waterfall. 10km, 5h00, + 570m, - 570.
Day 4 About one hour drive to Evisa, a peaceful mountain village famous for its chesnuts, where you will be spending the night.1h00. Walk under the shade of Laricio pine trees to the spectacular Aïtone waterfalls, a great swim spot. Then through Evisa chestnut forest where you will find trees that are hundreds of years old. 9km, 4h00, +450m, -450m. Setting out from Evisa village, a short walk leads to the neighbouring village of Cristinacce. An old village to village trail leads to the abandoned hamlet of Tassu and the village of Marignana. This is a wonderful loop passing through some really rural Corsican villages and some luxuriant fragrant vegetation. 9km, 4h30, +300m, -300m.
Day 5 Today's destination is Piana, one of France's official "Plus beaux villages". Discover the 'Calanche de Piana', granite needles, tortured shapes and rock sculpted formations. The most dramatic part of the coastline, classed by UNESCO as a site of world beauty. 11km, 4h30, +500m, -500m. A coastal walk that is absolutely spectacular. A path leads out to a promentary known as Capu Rossu. The cliffs plunge straight down to the pounding sea below and a Genoise tower awaits you high above. 7.5km, 4h00, +522m, -522m.
Day 6 After a short promenade to the Cove in the morning (3 hours back and forth), you are set on a boat excursion to Scandola. If the weather doesnt not permit it, an alternative activity will be proposed. The cove of Ficaghjola is a small sandy creek. With its white sand and high mountains it is very picturesque. It is a favourite nightstop for passing sailboats who like to drop anchor. 5km there and 5km back, about 1h30 one way, +450m, -450m. A short drive along the coast from Serriera to the Porto marina. From Porto we can take the boat to Scandola. The sea cliffs and scenery is breathtaking, the Scandola reserve is protected by unesco as a site of world beauty.3h00.
Day 7 Time to drive along the western coastline to Calvi, where you can visit the 15th century Citadel or explore the lively village. Discover the hidden treasures of the Haute Vallee du Fango: the classified Green Oak forest or the remainings of an ancient convent. Dip a foot in the refreshing waters of the river and enjoy! 12.5km, 4h00, +600, -600.
Day 8 End of holiday in Calvi.
